Attempt number argh for work thing worked! As did co-worker's attempt at the same problem from a different angle! (our goal for today was to at least get different error message for at least one of them). Which means tomorrow we can try the last option for implementing Thing then write it up, and maybe actually get back to Doing Thing so that just maybe I can meet a deadline.
