I've been reading essays recommended by various internet friends and I have taken White Fragility out of the library to help me grapple with things in the current moment.
I read stuff linked online by my friends, or in twitter - also, watch MSNBC news and listen to NPR. so what I'm getting isn't completely without bias, but hopefully there's enough clarity that I'm not misinformed
I get daily news updates in my email to try to keep up with stuff that doesn't show up in my social media. Two of them are from local(ish) newspapers. For national/international stuff I've wound up subscribed to the USA Today daily update, since I find it generally less depressing than the others I've tried (NYT and WaPo). I don't do more then skim them usually but it helps.
For REALLY local stuff I've had to resort to Facebook.
Yeah, the NYTimes daily update is pretty dire, followed by a recipe like that's going to make everything that preceded it lighter. I might try the USA Today one on for size.
I hate that Facebook is the best way to get local news. I get it, but I hate it.

It mainly focuses on Australian news [I live in Australia]
but there's quite a lot of coverage of the US; the UK; China.
