Restaurants are beginning to be restored in some places; other places we're still fending for ourselves. What's on your menu?

I'm going to try to make sushi today, because I have been craving it, and when I asked my roommate to buy me some from the supermarket he got the one kind I don't like.

On a friend's recommendation, I bought a giant box of cookies from belgianboys.com, which we've been slowly but steadily making our way through with ritualized restraint.

And then last night, there was this conversation:
Me: it's hot, should we do something to keep your fancy hot chocolate mix from melting?
Spouse: yeah, I stopped drinking it when we started being worried about running out of milk in the pandemic, and now it's too hot for hot chocolate.
[Conversation about frozen hot chocolate and Serendipity ensues]
[Spouse whips up experimental frozen hot chocolate]

Breakfast: Vanilla yoghurt.

Lunch: Brown rice crackers with basil/cashew spread

Dinner: [bought pre-prepared] Gluten free pasta with vegetables;
or [bought pre-prepared] Risotto with vegetables.

Uber Eats is still running here, but getting Uber Eats delivery is too high-risk for me - the packaged food sits inside an open brown paper bag, the drivers often put it on the front passenger seat or the front passenger footwell - so if a driver is coughing or sneezing, the packaging could get covered in germs. [And maybe the food itself, depending on how airtight the packaging is]. And because Uber Eats drivers get no paid sick leave, the chance of them working while sick is high.

Restaurants and cafes are just starting to reopen here [Western Australia] but again, too high risk for me.

For me, I'm not planning on leaving the house for the next 3 months for any reason except
a) essential medical reasons
b) moving house

We're in the US in an area that's definitely not going to be open for in-restaurant dining for some time.
We've been ordering delivery or pickup now and then (always calling the restaurant directly so GrubHub doesn't get a cut, tipping about 30% for delivery-- hazard pay!).
Mostly we're cooking, and my partner's wife and I alternate with others stepping in occasionally.
But I've definitely gotten to the point where the novelty of having the time normally taken up by my commute to cook more elaborate things has worn off and I don't always want to do it.
Things I made this week:
- Gluten free pasta with white beans sauteed in garlic, lemon, and olive oil-- takes about 30 minutes and 1 pot, 1 pan (could whack a sheet pan in the oven with the beans and broccoli if you prefer).
- Got more ambitious and decided I wanted to work on Japanese cooking skills (I can do sushi rolls but it's been a long time; have done a curry or two). Sushi rice, negimiso onion miso sauce that I put on some tilapia, tamago sweet omelette (time consuming but fun to make), and teriyaki sheet pan vegetables. Made the toddler nephews' plates into cute bentos, which they admired but did not consume-- we're working on it!

Some low effort things that are frequently in the rotation:
- Oven grilled cheese+ roast vegetables-- stick two sheet pans in the oven, flip once, dinner is done.
- DIY Nacho bar-- tortilla chips, can of refried beans, grilled bell peppers/onions, maybe some greens or other veggies, cheese, possibly leftover meat if we have it, salsa, vary depending on ingredients and interests.
- Breakfast for dinner!

I may also bother to learn to use the grill this summer so that housemate isn't the only one who can manage it.

Still mostly eating at home, but occasional thai out at a restaurant, as I can't make stirfry at home (weak plug-in element). The lockdown's caused our local Lebanese to offer delivery so that's good, as I'm too far out on the semi-rural fringe for most places.

mostly the same old same old, but with fewer veggies and less variety in fruit, because a) shopping is now the responsibility of Middlest. and b) only shopping once a week. I need to work out how to put more variety in the shopping list, rather than working to a quantity when at the store.

Having said that, Youngest and I went through the pantry and pulled out a stack of things to use up (near or past 6 months old), and they have been working through the baking ingredients and I have been working through the rest. Today, I used up the last of the chickpeas.
